One way I integrated one of my authors was a discussion about how the Internet and having everything so fast paced has caused us to stop deep reading things and only skim through things. I used a quotation from Nicholas Carr’s essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” where Carr said, “Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy…Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as if I’m always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle.” (Carr 1). I explained how this is caused by our constant need for everything to be fast paced since the Internet is able to offer us anything and everything at what seems like the speed of light, so we require everything at the speed of light. I related it by asking the reader a question, trying to get them to think of the last time they fully read a book and I connected it to myself, admitting that it has been a long time for me, as I am not used to reading many books these days. I thought this would really help the reader relate to the author’s quote, as well as my own personal experience and also show that the reader has probably experienced something similar. I thought this really helped my paper a lot, as it felt like it really helped keep the reader’s attention.
